What is bandwidth? How much do I need?
Bandwidth is basically the amount of data that your website transmits. The most often used term is GB/month. (GigaBytes per month).
To put things in perspective... a full, uncompressed DVD movie is roughly 4.5 GB. The average mp3 is less than .5% of one Gigabyte.
So plan accordingly. If you plan on having more than 10,000 people download more than 2 or 3 mp3 songs in a day, or 1,000 people watch a couple of videos, you're going to need more than 300 GB of bandwidth.
But if you're running a family website, or a small business without a lot of audio, video, and other multimedia packages, a smaller package will work just fine for you. Depending on the number of people in your family, and the size of the pictures/material you are putting on your website, you will probably only need 50 GB of bandwidth (also known as "transfer").
